About

StudentCard's mission is  'making it cheaper to be a student', by sourcing bigger than average deals on products/services students already buy.

Founded in October 2001, StudentCard has grown quickly and spread across NZ.

The business model behind the card is unique and is geared towards giving large numbers of students the chance to save real money on big brands. At the same time it means that lots of students are using the card every day to make actual purchases from retailers, driving sales for our clients. It's an experimental model that had never been tried before, but has resulted in NZ's largest and most successful nationwide multi-retailer tertiary loyalty card (or NMRTLC for short).

StudentCard does very little traditional ( ATL) advertising with the only promotion being some direct sales promotions during O Weeks. The majority of students who get a card first heard about it through word of mouth, resulting in StudentCard getting deals that are not generally offered to the public.

Funding for the card comes from students buying the card, partners such as Bank of New Zealand, and a wee bit from advertising. The majority of income comes from students, keeping StudentCard honest to its mission.

If you are a tertiary student studying in New Zealand and you like the look of the Deals, you can sign up for a card any time online, alternatively you can get them from one of our oncampus stalls during 'O' Week or UBS Bookshop based at Auckland Uni.

If you are interested in becoming a reseller of StudentCard, see the Contact page for how to get in touch.

If you have a company/product/service and want to offer a deal to students via StudentCard, see the Contact page for how to get in touch.

The name "StudentCard" comes from an ingenious combination of the two words "student" and "card", which represent both the target demographic and physical manifestation of the brand. It is spelled with a capital "S" and a capital "C", but nobody else gets it right so you may as well not bother either.

The squiggly line that appears on the card and on this site is, funnilly enough, the StudentCard logo. For the visually impaired, it consists of an "S" sitting on top of a "C". Officially it is known as the "skwoosh" (like Nike's "swoosh" sans copyright infringement) but it has become popularly known as the "squiggle" and who are we to argue.
